Each week we introduce one of our most popular PC games at Lava Esports. This week we go through the world-famous team strategy game – League of Legends!
The game is extremely popular all over the world. League of Legends is played by 115 million active gamers per month and is one of the most viewed games on Twitch and YouTube.
Right, let’s have a look at what makes League of Legends one of our arcade’s most popular PC games.
League of Legends is a team-based strategy game also known as a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). There are two teams of five players. The aim of the game is to try and destroy the opposing team’s base.
Each individual gamer controls a character (also known as a ‘champion’). As of April 2021, there were 155 champions to chose from and play as.
During a match players can improve their XP by defeating their opponents and as you would expect, this develops a player’s gaming skills and enables them to become more experienced at the game.
Gamers can also collect items which improve their champion’s strength. This is achieved by purchasing these items with gold. Gold is obtained when the gamer defeats the opposition’s, minions, champions or defensive structures.
Therefore, by defeating other players and characters during a match, the game rewards you by providing you with stronger powers, allowing you more power to defeat the opposition.
There are many game modes in League of Legends, however by far the most popular mode is that of Summoner’s Rift. It is played most regularly by professional and amateur gamers alike. Let’s have a look at what you may encounter in this mode.
Summoner’s Rift Mode
As with most modes, Summoners Rift requires two teams of five to compete against each other and to be the first to destroy the other’s base. Each team must defend their base with their characters/’champions’ and defensive structures (‘Turrets’).
Each team’s base includes three ‘inhibitors’. Destroying one of these creates stronger minions (non-player characters). Therefore, enabling the attacking team to better attacking the opposition’s base and nexus with their minions.
Now let’s take a look at how the battle arena is set out.
Team bases are located in the top right and bottom left corners of the map. These are connected by roads or ‘lanes’ as they are known in League of Legends. There is a middle lane which goes from the bottom left (team 1’s base) to the top right (team 2’s base). There are also bottom and top lanes in each of the teams’ halves of the map.
In between these ‘lanes’, the Summoner’s Rift map in League of Legends has areas known as ‘Jungles’. These contain ‘monsters’. As with minions they respawn (suddenly appear) and provide gamers with gold and XP when killed. Stronger monsters are found in rivers. Unlike Jungle monsters they are much stronger and require many team members to kill them. However, they provide special abilities to the team members who can defeat them.
Normal League of Legends team tactics state that one player will patrol the top lane, another in the middle lane, one in the Jungle and two in the bottom lane.
This game mode has a ranked competitive ladder for gamers to measure their skills and abilities. There are 9 ranks overall. The top three ranks are as follows; Master, Grandmaster and Challenger.
Matches can last between 15 minutes to over one hour.
League of Legends requires excellent teamwork, communication and strategic thought to become successful. There are many tournaments which offer lucrative prizes for the top performing teams.
